Description:

Manufactured in 1898. This rifle has the very desirable casehardened receiver. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn rear sight with screw adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight. "40-82 W.C.F." is on the left side of the barrel ahead of the receiver. Oval post-1905 Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. (No factory letter is available to writer to explain the five year later proofs, either factory return or shipped late.) The upper receiver tang has "-MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and magazine have 95% blue finish with a few insignificant and barely noticeable scratches. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish, and nearly all of the fire blue finish is present on the loading gate. The receiver and hammer have 85% vivid case colors. The lever has strong case colors on the side with a silver patina on the balance. The buttplate has faded to a mottled silver-gray with some light pitting on the buttplate toe. The wood is very good retaining 85% of the varnish finish with scattered and very minor handling marks. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.
