Description:

Measuring 37 3/4 inches overall, with a 32 inch curved double fuller blade decorated with etched scroll and patriotic motifs across two-thirds of the sides, the Ames address etched on the right, "J.H." inspectors mark on the right ricasso and "1862" on the left. The hilt is gilt brass construction with races of additional silver plating on the floral decoration, with a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. The scabbard is Ames marked on the upper suspension band, with raised oak leaf decoration on the suspension bands, brass furniture, and a blue finished steel body.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The blade shows a very fine bright original polish overall, with some light spotting and flaking concentrated on the upper third near the tip and strong detail in the etching. The hilt retains 50% of the original gilt, with a well aged patina on the areas of visible brass, a slight bend in the counterguard and rear quillion from an old impact, and some opening in the seam of the grip wrap. A coating of protective varnish is present on the very fine scabbard, with some dents, scuffs and spots.
