Description:

An estimated 122,000 Remington New Model Army revolvers were manufactured from 1863 to 1875. Most of the Civil War era revolvers were manufactured under contract with the U.S. Ordnance Department. They were the second most widely issued revolvers by the Union and remained in use even after the war. The large military contracts meant that only around 15,000 revolvers were manufactured for commercial/civilian sales. Many of the commercial revolvers were also used during the war as privately purchased sidearms, and many saw hard use on the western frontier including in conflicts with Native Americans over land and other resources. The revolver has a German silver cone front sight, the standard two-line address and patent marking, frame groove rear sight, small "A" inspection marks on several components including the grips, "S" on the loading lever and silver-plated trigger guard, "B" on the rear left trigger guard shoulder, "H" marked between the trigger guard and grip on the left, matching serial numbers stamped on the barrel and frame and handwritten on the back of the grips, and the partial serial number "2689" on the rear of the cylinder. The case and powder flask match the design of those with other New Model revolvers in "Remington Firearms: The Golden Age of Collection." The case also contains a "ELEY BROS" cap tin, "COLT'S/PATENT" dual cavity bullet mold, cleaning rod, powder flask and package of six cartridges for .44 caliber revolvers. A "J. D. Palmer' marked card with "JAMES DAVIS PALMER" handwritten on the back in modern ink is also included. Consignor notes indicate Palmer was reported to be the original owner and was from Richmond, Virginia. There is no additional documentation concerning the set or card.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 95% of the original silver plating, casehardened finish on the hammer, and niter blue on the trigger. The silver has taken on an even bluish patina. The loading lever has 40% of the flaked blue with the balance a dark brown patina. The barrel retains 80% plus original blue, the cylinder has 60%, and the frame has traces of original finish. The balance has varying degrees of brown patina and some light spotting/pitting. There are some scratches and spots of heavy edge wear. The grips are very fine with minor scratches, a few nicks, and light storage wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has moderate overall wear including some tearing and staining of the lining. The bullet mold retains 85% original blue finish.
