Description:

Remington manufactured 12,501 "Harpers Ferry Pattern" rifles, popularly known as the Model 1863 "Zouave" rifles, using the same tooling Remington had used to produce Model 1841s for the military before the war. None are known to have been issued despite their high quality. The origin of the "Zouave" nickname is unclear despite many theories. It seems likely that the nickname was a marketing ploy when they were sold as surplus after the war and into the 20th century since the Zouave units were among the most colorful units and were widely depicted in period publications. This example has the standard markings and features and is dated "1863" on the lock and barrel. It comes with a sword bayonet with scabbard and frog.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 85% plus original blue and casehardened finish, aged patina on the brass, minor spotting, general minor marks, dark re-oiled finish on the stock, crisp markings, and some minor scratches and dings. The bayonet is also very fine and has a bright blade, attractively aged patina on the brass, and somewhat crumpled and otherwise fine scabbard and frog. Mechanically excellent.
