Description:

Only around 6,150 New Model 1863 military rifles were manufactured in 1863-1865 with front sight bases that doubled as the lugs for socket bayonets. Many saw hard use during the second half of the Civil War, and 1,086 New Model rifles were converted after the war for metallic cartridges. This example has the standard markings and features including distinct cartouches and inspector markings on the stock. It comes with an unmarked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with 25% plus of the fading original blue finish, strong case colors on the patch box and buttplate, bright niter blue on the buttplate screws, traces of original case colors elsewhere, and gray and brown patina and light oxidation on the balance. The wood has crisp cartouches, an added oil finish, some chipping at the tail of the lock, some rather nice figure near the toe, and general minor dents and scratches. The bayonet has bright armory polish with minor patination overall. Mechanically excellent.
