This is a Type I Model 1863 with the screw fastened barrel bands and "1863" on the lock and barrel tang. It has standard markings and features as well as "eagle/WHITNEY ARMS CO." stamp on the right side of the stock near the buttplate. Eli Whitney Jr. reorganized his family's business in 1863 as the Whitney Arms Co. and is known to have purchased condemned parts from the U.S. armories as well as other outside contractors to assemble "good and serviceable arms" primarily for states and militia units. These rifle-musket barrels were blued by Whitney whereas standard issue weapons were left armory bright. The bayonet is marked with a dot over "US/2."

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with a dark, mottled mix of gray and brown patina, traces of period retailer applied blue finish and case colors, and oxidation on the metal and numerous dings and scrapes, a large chip on the left at the front behind the forend cap, distinct markings, and nice oil finish on the wood. The bayonet is mostly bright with some minor spotting and brown patina. Mechanically excellent.
