Description:

This rifle is featured on page 18 of "U.S. Military Bolt Action Rifles" by Bruce Canfield. It is one of only 1,008 rifles manufactured in 1870 for testing by the U.S. military. Unlike the Model 1871, it only has "US/SPRINGFIELD/1870" on the right below the eagle and a single stop on the cleaning rod. It has no markings on the left side of the action and is not equipped with the "locking action" that drops the hammer down to half cock when the breech is closed. It features a "barley corn" blade and bayonet stud front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, the two-line Remington address and patent marking on the upper tang, and an "ESA" cartouche on the stock wrist on the left. It is equipped with a military style leather sling. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The receiver retains 30% of the subdued case colors, and the rear sight retains most of the original blue finish. The remaining parts remain mostly bright with some speckled light pitting. The reoiled wood is also very good and has only scattered minor dents and scratches. The cartouche is partially faded, but it and the remaining markings are legible. Mechanically excellent.
