This example of a Model 1842 is dated "1846" on the tail of the lock and the barrel tang and has standard markings and features. The Model 1842 muskets were the standard U.S. infantry weapons in the Mexican-American War in 1846-1848 and were also widely used in the Civil War, especially in the early years and by state volunteer units. They were the last of the U.S. martial smoothbore muskets.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with bright polished iron surfaces, traces of light pitting and oxidation, and generally minor marks and scratches. Some of the markings are lightly worn. The stock is very fine as reoiled and has a crisp cartouche on the left and some minor storage wear. Mechanically excellent.
