Description:

In 1856-1859, the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia converted Model 1816 flintlock muskets to the Maynard tape percussion system using 20,000 locks and bolsters manufactured by Remington. They are known to have been issued to the U.S. Navy as early as 1857, the 6th U.S. Infantry at Fort Riley, Kansas, and several New York units. Those the Maynard system proved unreliable, many were used during the Civil War, primarily using traditional percussion caps. It has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, long range notch and folding ladder rear sight, standard proof and inspection marks, "1857" and "Y/A/4" on the barrel tang, "J.T." on the primer door, "REMINGTON'S/ILION N.Y./1857/U.S." on the tail of the lock, and "E[F?]" and "A/3" cartouches on the left stock flat. An early style "US" marked socket bayonet without locking ring is included.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with mottled gray patina on the lock and barrel, traces of original brown finish on the remaining iron components, mild to moderate pitting and oxidation, and scattered marks and scratches. The revanished stock has crisp cartouches, some slight hairline cracks, minor surface chipping, and general scrapes and dings. The bayonet has a mix of brown and gray patina, bright surfaces, and mild pitting. Mechanically excellent.
