Description:

The Model 1817 was dubbed the "common rifle" in correspondence to differentiate it from the more unusual Hall breech loading rifles. This example comes from Starr's 1840 contract which consisted of 6,000 rifles. It has "N STARR & SON" in an arch over a sunrise and "U.S" at the center of the lock, "MIDDTN/CONN/1840" on the tail of the lock, standard proofs and "1840" at the breech, fixed blade and notch sights, "WAT" and "JH" cartouches, and the distinctive oval patch box. "No. 40" is stamped on the belly of the stock. All of the fittings aside from the brass pan and ramrod tip are iron.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mottled gray and brown patina, moderate pitting, traces of original brown finish, and general marks and scratches. The top jaw, adjustment screw, cock screw, and frizzen screw are all modern replacements, but the gun does not appear to have been reconverted. The stock is fine with chipping around some of the inlets, scattered scratches and dings, and some chips and bruising. Mechanically fine.
