Description:

Franz (Frans) Weisengrueber is listed as active around 1710 in "Der Neue Stockel" by Heer. The barrel is marked "FRANZ WEISENGRVEBER" on top on a raised "rib" that is fitted with a brass front sight, has a deep muzzle crown, and has engraving and raised designs around Weisengrueber's "FWG" maker's mark ("Der Neue Stockel" p.1140). The tang is engraved with the number "1". The lock is finely engraved in low relief with a battle scene (possibly depicting an event from the War of the League of Augsburg or the then ongoing Great Northern War), a bridle-less frizzen/pan, and bevelled edges. The brass furniture throughout was gilded and has fine engraving including various 17th/18th century scenes. The left side plate has pierced and engraved designs that include two hunters and their two dogs retrieving a rabbit. The butt cap has a grotesque mask plug as well as scenes showing a man on horseback on each side. A bust of a woman is on the trigger guard, and the thumb plate has a grotesque mask design among the border work. The stock is carved in relief around the upper tang and the bottom as well as raised panels and a horn forend cap that matches the horn tip on the ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled gray and brown patina and some light pitting/oxidation along the barrel and lock, traces of original gilding in the protected areas of the furniture, light aged patina on the balance of the brass, and typical minor marks and scratches. The stock is also fine and has some chips at the edges of the butt, minor cracking at the forend tip, and scattered moderate scrapes and dings. The markings, engraving, and carving designs remain mostly distinct. Mechanically fine.
