Description:

Durs Egg (1748-1831) was one of the finest gunmakers in London in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He was born in Switzerland, trained in Solothurn and Paris, emigrated to United Kingdom in 1772, worked for John Twigg, opened his own shop in 1778, served as a gunmaker to the Prince of Wales, and was the co-creator of one of the first airship designs. Unfortunately, he was blinded in 1822, but the business carried on under his name long after his death. Egg's firearms were manufactured in a wide variety of patterns, all with an eye towards overall quality. This pistol would have been well-suited to travelers who may need to defend a coach from highwaymen and has "D Egg London" fancy script surrounded by scrollwork designs in gold inlay, a dovetailed blade front sight, engraved bands of foliage at the muzzles, dual gold bands at the breech of the upper barrel, platinum vent liners, London private proof and view marks on the lower right flat of the bottom barrel, "D. EGG/LONDON" on the locks below the semi-waterproof style pans, sliding half-cock safeties, frizzen spring rollers, engraved scroll and martial motifs, a silver thumb plate, and a checkered bag shaped grip. A baleen style ramrod with horn tip is fitted below the barrels, and the oak case contains a few lead balls and a brass mounted copper three-way powder flask and is designed to hold a second pistol.

Rating Definition:

Very good with professionally restored brown finish on the barrels, attractive Damascus patterns, some slight pitting, virtually all of the original golden inlay, light original case colors on the locks, most of the restored blue on the trigger guard, gray patina on the trigger plate, and aged patina on the silver. The stock is very good and has fairly crisp checkering, smooth finish, and some light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has moderate overall wear including some chipping and torn lining.
