Manufactured circa 1884-1890. The barrels are engraved with a spray of foliage at each breech and feature a raised matte rib engraved over its entire length with diamond-shaped checkering with a dot in the center of each diamond. Blade front sight and border and scroll engraved blued adjustable rear sight. Border and scroll engraved blued action apparently forged together with the barrels and signed on each side "MILLER & VAL. GREISS MÜNCHEN." The upper edges and tang are engraved with diamond shaped checkering en suite with the rib, and the center bar engraved with running foliage along its upper edge. The two casehardened hinged breechblocks are engraved with further diamond shaped checkering. The upper tang is fitted with a sprung aperture rear sight. Border and scroll engraved rebounding back action island locks, trigger plate and underlever. Trigger guard engraved en suite and with scrolled dark horn pistol grip finger-rest. Two set triggers. Figured 13 ¾ inch walnut half stock with raised cheekpiece, checkered sliding patch box cover and checkered grip, blued steel buttplate engraved with further diamond shaped checkering, iron sling mounts, and horn-tipped wooden cleaning-rod. Weight is 9 lbs. 2.2 oz. This gun bears the crowned "V" Vorratszeichen mark denoting pre-1891 manufacture. It is noted that Greiss patented a double-barrel falling block action in 1884. Fine. The barrels and sides of the action retain 98% older reblued finish and the engraving and signatures remaining clear. The breechblocks each retain 98% faded original casehardened finish. The locks retain 99% strong original casehardened finish, the underlever 60% original casehardened finish, the trigger plate 95% original casehardened finish, and the trigger guard 98% original deep blued finish. Engraving remains crisp and clear. Stock is very good with minor scattered storage and handling marks and checkering remains sharp. The buttplate retains 75% original deep blue finish with crisp engraving.
