Description:

This 22-point Fallow deer mount hails from the King George of Saxony Collection from the house of Wetten, one of the oldest royal familys of Europe. The Kingdom of Saxony served between 1806 and 1918, was an independent member of a number of historical confederacies in Napoleonic through post-Napoleonic Germany. The kingdom was formed from the Electorate of Saxony. From 1871 it was part of the German Empire. It became a free state in the era of Weimar Republic in 1918 after the end of WW I and the abdication of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. Its capital was the city of Dresden, and its modern successor state is the free state of Saxony. George served under his brother Albert's command during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and in the Franco-German War. In the reorganization of the army which accompanied the march towards Paris, his brother the Crown Prince gained a separate command over the 4th army (Army of the Meuse) consisting of the Saxon XII corps, the Prussian Guard corps, and the IV (Prussian Saxony) corps and George succeeded him in command of the XII corps. In 1871, Prince George was awarded the Grand Cross of the Württemberg Military Merit. Consisting of a traditional European-style skullcap, this fallow deer mount features a 22-point rack with a 27 1/2 inch span, with a brass "crown/2GR" plaque (attributed - by the Royal Hunt inventory as the cartouche of King George of Saxony, born 1832, reign 1902-1904) as the set on the front of the cap and the date "18 11/X 83" (October 11, 1883) printed in black ink on the rear. The plaque is carved hardwood, 14 inches wide and 21 inches tall, with raised carved pine themed decoration and scroll accents. These trophies have survived traversing the Atlantic, two world wars, and the ravages of time and have been curated over a period of 40 years through descendants of Kaiser Wilhelm II, private collectors, auctions and individuals in Europe.

Rating Definition:

Good overall. The George cartouche plaque shows some cracking and dents.
