Description:

The consignor personally collected this item in Malaysia and believes it to be of Dutch origin. It has astragal and fillet rings, sea serpent style handles, a large unknown crest design ahead of the vent, and 29 inch overall length. Dutch and Portuguese small cannons/swivel guns/rail guns are widespread in Southeast Asia as are similar cannons manufactured in Borneo and other areas by local foundries. They were used for defense against pirates, headhunters, and other adversaries; signaling, and ceremonial purposes from the 17th century into the early 20th century, and held significant monetary and personal value. Some were even used against U.S. troops during the Moro Rebellion. Many are still found throughout the Pacific Islands.

Rating Definition:

Fine with attractive aged patina and generally mild wear.
