Description:

This is an example of a representative sought after Colt Single Action Army revolver that was chambered for the .44 rimfire cartridge. Only 1,863 Single Action Army revolvers were chambered in this caliber. The 44 rimfire series was introduced in 1875, and they were serial numbered in their own range of 1 to 1,863. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver as being chambered in .44 rimfire and with a blue finish when it was shipped to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York City on June 25, 1877, as part of a 25 gun shipment. The barrel length and type of stocks are not listed, which usually indicated 7 1/2 inches and walnut, respectively. The modern replacement barrel is marked with the one-line address on top and "44," which indicates the caliber, on the underside. The left side of the frame has the three-line patent dates marking. It has the early "bull's-eye ejector rod head. Matching serial numbers are on the barrel (renumbered), frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. Colt sold most of the .44 RF production to obscure banana republics in South and Central America due to a limited acceptance on the American market where they saw hard and abusive use. Surviving examples are rare.

Rating Definition:

Fair as rebarreled. The revolver has an artificial brown-gray patina and lightly pitted throughout. The sanded grip is also fair showing moderate high edge wear and a few mild handling marks. Mechanically fine with old action fault rectified using a small brass shim to tighten rotation.
