Description:

Fixed sights, with the "1940" date over the chamber and the Mauser "banner" logo on the toggle. A set of "eagle/N" proofs are present on the extension and breechblock and the "eagle/swastika L" Police stamp on the right side of the extension. Save for a single witness mark on the underside, the barrel is unmarked, with proper matching external numbers on the other components, including the "1" marked blue finished alloy base magazine. Overall finish is full blue, with a sear safety on the extension and a pair of checkered grips. Included with the pistol is a black leather 1940 dated Otto Sindel holster, a gray Nazi Police proofed "eagle/swastika" marked takedown tool, and a capture certificate from the 31st Fighter Group dated 29 July 1945, designating this pistol by serial number (sans suffix) to a 2nd Lieutenant Francis G. Wuerstle, along with vintage photographs of American P-51 Mustang fighters (one, named "Muscles", is noted specifically as Wuerstle's aircraft on the back) and a handwritten note. Records show a Francis Wuerstle from West Rockhill Township, Pennsylvania, as with the Army Air Force/U.S.A.F. from 1944 to 1952, noting a final rank of 1st Lieutenant and service in the Korean War. Constituted in 1939, the 31st flew Supermarine Spitfires out of England in support of the Dieppe Raid, Algeria in support of Operation Torch, and later re-equipped with Mustangs for long range bomber escort throughout Europe, as well as spending much of 1944 and 1945 operating in Italy. The last posting is of particular relevance, as the hand-written note (unsigned) recalls that Wuerstle recounted getting the pistol in a trade with an Englishman, who had himself taken it as loot from a Nazi-run police station in Italy. Among other notable firsts, the 31st was the first American group to set up shop in Britain during WW II, scored America's first air-to-air kill, and was the first to go operational with the Mustang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus with 99% of the blue finish, showing some extremely light handling marks. The grips are also excellent. The grips are excellent, with a few dings and dark spots. The holster is very good, with a few light scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
