Description:

This is an excellent example of a very early production Mauser Model 1914 long barrel "humpback" pistol. These humpback pistols were pilot models to test public acceptance of the new gun. The humpback was principally used to give a different look from the Model 1910. A long barrel (as is the case with this pistol) and a 4 mm were also offered on this model. The humpback slide was dropped from production no later than serial number 3,000, after Mauser felt the extra milling step was not necessary. With only 3,000 manufactured, this variation is considered rare and with less than 1,000 having the long barrel, makes this pistol very rare. These pistols are one of the highest sought after variations of the Mauser Pocket Pistols. This exact pistol is described and pictured in the book "Mauser Pocket Pistols 1910 to 1946" by Pender on pages 100-101 showing both sides and the top of the slide. The left side of the slide is marked "Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G./Oberndorf a, N./Mauser's Patent", below that on the frame is the Mauser banner. The serial number is marked on top of the slide directly ahead of the rear sight and behind the rear sight is a "crown/crown/U" proofmark. The milled panel on the right rear of the frame is engraved "L.K. 86". Most of these pistols were marked with "LK" followed by 2 or 3 numbers, however the significance of the marking is unknown. Blade front sight with serrated sighting surface and "U" notch rear sight, rust blue finish with nitre blue trigger and barrel retaining rod head, matching numbered nickel magazine and fitted with finely checkered wrap around walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains 97% original blue finish with some wear on the muzzle and forward slide edges and some thinning on the front strap. Most of the nitre blue finish remains on the trigger (the face is bright) and the barrel retaining pin head, which shows wear on the edges. The grips are also excellent with a small chip on the upper right rear edge, a few minor dings and some minor wear on the crisp checkering. The markings remain sharp. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional example of an extremely rare and desirable documented Model 1914 Long Barrel Humpback pistol.
