This highly engraved shotgun includes a leather takedown case marked on the exterior "Mrs. A.B. WHARTON, Jr. VERNON, TEXAS" a matching leather label is found on the inside of the lid. Albert Buckman Wharton Jr. (1909-1963) was a Texas rancher and polo player, and an heir to the second largest ranch in Texas. The Waggoner Ranch spanned over 800 square miles, 6 counties, and is roughly half the size of Rhode Island. Known for cattle, horses, and even oil, the ranch was established in 1852 by Daniel Waggoner, and stayed within the Waggoner family until it was ultimately sold in 2016 to billionaire husband of Wal-Mart heiress, Ann Walton Kroenke. A.B. "Buster" Wharton Jr. raised polo ponies and established the El Ranchio Polo Club on the ranch. Wharton was married several times throughout his life, and it is unknown which of his wives this shotgun is attributed to. Single bead sight on the matte rib with 3 inch chambers, ejectors, standard Spanish commercial proofs and full/full chokes. The receiver and lock plates are fully engraved with flowing leafy scroll with standard maker's marks, dual triggers, and tang mounted thumb safety. The trigger guard tang is stamped "MMo. 133" on top of the serial number. Checkered forearm and straight grip stock with a brass initial shield and solid rubber recoil pad. Stock measurements are: 1 1/4 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull.

Good as partially refinished. The barrels have an overall thinning blue finish with light markings, some gray patina, light forearm marks, and rounded edges. The receiver and lock plates have 95% original case colors with some marring on the screw heads, and mild edge wear. The refinished wood is also good, with visible gaps around the forearm fitting, well-defined checkering, added pad, and a filled sling swivel hole on the belly of the stock. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with scuffs and dings throughout the exterior, and some interior wear.
