Description:

This is an example of a WWII Underwood production M1 carbine that has been converted into the infrared sniper model by equipping it with a very scarce early production M2 infrared sniper scope. The M2 infrared sniper scope was the original first generation infrared scope that was developed in late 1944, early 1945, that saw some very limited use in the Pacific but not in Europe. These are easily identified by the smaller round scope tube. They were redesigned after WWII into Korean War era, M3 version. The carbine has the standard receiver markings that is stamped with serial number, "2806925" with the front of the barrel stamped "UNDERWOOD/11-43". Currently it is fitted with a late production round bolt, "JI" marked type III front barrel band/bayonet lug, flip safety and original M3 flash hider. It has the WWII production stock that is stamped "LW" in the sling cutout with no "P" proof and a late production four rivet handguard. As noted, the rear sight has been removed and an original M2 infrared mounting bar has been installed in its place. The M2 infrared sniper set-up that accompanies this carbine is complete to include the earlier, narrower, unmarked power pack, larger heavier electrical power cable, battery and canvas back-pack type carrying case. The scope body is only marked with "D5637-7-1" with no other markings and is fitted with a very rare WWII brown plastic front lens cover and canvas attaching strap. It comes with one 15 round magazine and original canvas sling. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

The M1 carbine is very fine as arsenal refurbished with 98% of the light gray parkerized finish overall with only edge and high spot wear. The stock and handguard are both very fine with a nice matching medium brown color overall showing only minor handling marks on the right rear side. The infrared sniper scope and collector assembly retain 98% of their black finishes overall with no cracks or visible damage to the lens etc., (however the scope unit is untested). The power pack and canvas case are excellent. This is a very rare example of an original WWII M2 infrared sniper scope that is rarely encountered that has been mounted on a desirable WWII Underwood M1 carbine rig.
