The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was made for Wm. Reade and completed in March 1878. Features a blade front sight and three leaf (two folding) rear sight on the matte solid rib. The top of the left barrel on the breech end is marked "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" and "98 NEW BOND STREET LONDON" on the right side. There is a sling swivel eye on the underside of the rib. The barrels, lever and trigger guard are blue. The action, rebounding back action locks, trigger guard, forearm hardware and under lever are nicely engraved with scrollwork. Each lock is marked "HOLLAND & HOLLAND." The left side of the action is marked "CHARGE 6 DRAMS, CASE 3 INCHES", and the action has carved percussion fences. The matching serial number is marked on the lower tang, both sides of the water table, on the bottom of each barrel and on the forearm hardware. London black powder proofmarks on the water table, and two "crown/GP" proofs on the barrel flats. Mounted with a checkered wedge secured splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with a horn grip cap, cheek piece, sling swivel eye and a silver initial oval inscribed "CCC". Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches.

Good as partially refinished, the blue components, with 99% blue finish remaining, showing scattered pitting under the finish on the barrels, rear sight leafs and lower tang. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The wood is good, with the forearm hardware ill-fitting, a couple of replacement wood repairs, it is cracked and a gold water buffalo head has been mounted near the knuckle. The stock appears to be a replacement and has been revarnished, showing some scattered minor dents and dings, and the buttplate is absent. The engraving and markings are clear. The action is fine.
