Description:

Manufactured in 1893 and subsequently custom embellished near a century later by Master Engraver Nick Kusmit. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a no. 3, 28 inch octagon barrel in .32-40 caliber, single set trigger, X stock, mid-range and windage sights and Swiss buttplate when it was received in the warehouse on January 12, 1897, and shipped on November 13, 1897. The included handwritten letter by Winchester Custom Shop engraver and author Pauline Muerrle states the engraving was done by Winchester Custom Shop engraver Nick Kusmit. Also included is a photocopy of the original smoke print made by Kusmit for this gun as identified by Muerrle. The engraved receiver features scrollwork on a punch dot background, borders and games scenes inside stylized panels. Kusmit signed the receiver "NK" on the left side. The receiver and lever are silver plated. It has a globe front sight, a filler block in the rear sight dovetail slot, Vernier tang sight and single set trigger. The nicely figured straight grip stock is fitted with a silver plated Swiss buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom embellished by Master Engraver Nick Kusmit. Most of the respective finishes remaining showing a minor ding on the barrel and a few minor handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent.
