Description:

This is a fine example of a very desirable 1902 Luger carbine that has a series of "Thai" markings on the left, rear and right milled panel area of the frame. These markings appear to be engraved and then filled with white paint and may represent some type of military markings. These carbines were an attempt by DWM to a produce a light weight rifle-*substitute pistol that was sold with a detachable walnut shoulder stock. There were a total of 2500 of this model ever produced in two serial number blocks with this specific pistol being in the second block. The unique feature of these pistols is that they all have an 11 3/4 inch barrel with a forearm that contains a small spring assembly that engages a small lug on the underside of the barrel which actually functions as an accelerator to help in cycling the pistol. The top of the chamber is blank and the front toggle has the DWM logo for "Deutsche Waffen und Munitions Fabriken". The frame is the early style with a flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles, and recessed/flat breech bolt. It is fitted with the correct three position rear sight (adjustable from 100-300 meters) and a ramp front sight. The full serial number (23753) is correctly marked on the frame extension, and the underside of the barrel. The last two digits of the serial number are marked on the bottom of the recoil lug, grip safety, trigger, takedown lever, side plate, breech bolt and toggle assembly. The inside of the grips have a single "*" proof, but no serial number. The buttstock normally sold with these pistols is missing. The magazine is a correct unmarked wood base version with a nickel-plated body. These pistols were rust blued with a straw color on the various small parts.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially refinished (side plate and extractor) overall with 80% of the faded original rust blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear with some thinning and slight frosting on the top and sides of the barrel in front of the forend. The reoiled forend is in fine condition showing minor handling marks overall with some wear across the tops of the diamonds and the grips are also in near excellent condition showing nice sharp checkering on both sides with the left side showing some minor chips of the checkering in a few places. A very unusual 1902 Luger Carbine with the Thai markings.
