Description:

This is a solid representative example of a first issue/altered DWM Model 1906 Imperial German Navy Luger, that has the Chinese marked back strap. These Navy Lugers have always been highly sought after by collectors due to their low production numbers and unique 6 inch barrel. These first issue/altered models were ones that were reworked by having the safe marking of "GESICHERT" altered and moved to the upper position on the rear of the frame and the safety reconfigured to match. This was so that they would have the same markings and function as the standard short barreled military lugers. The Chinese markings indicate that this pistol was to the German Navy Garrison stationed at the German Colony in Kiaochow China. The rear grip strap is engraved "GOUV/KIAU/236". The Chinese mainland was eventually invaded by the Japanese in 1914 with this specific Garrison being heavily sieged for several months before eventually capitulating in late 1914. In addition this example has the standard British firing proofs and markings on the underside of the barrel, indicating it was imported into England after WWII. The left barrel extension has the double "Crown/M" proofmarks with the smaller Imperial "Crown" firing proof that is repeated again on the left barrel side. The frame and barrel underside are correctly numbered with the full serial number and the last two digits of the serial number on various small parts. It is fitted with a set of unnumbered replacement grips. It comes with a standard navy issue matching wood base magazine. The base is stamped with a "Crown/M" proof and "3914".

Rating Definition:

Fine as arsenal refurbished with 90% of the current blue finish overall with light edge and high spot wear with thinning and a mixed gray patina on the lower grip straps. The smaller parts have been restraw colored with 70% remaining overall. The grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides showing only minor handling marks overall.
