Description:

This is an excellent example of a WWII Johnson Model 1941 semi-automatic rifle that was manufactured by the Cranston Arms Co. In August 1940, the Netherlands Purchasing Commission ordered 10,200 Johnson Automatic rifles to arm colonial troops in the Dutch East Indies. They were later adopted in limited numbers by the USMC. The Japanese invaded and captured the Dutch colonies in December 1941 before most of the Johnson Model 1941 rifles could be delivered. This rifle has the later "B" prefix serial number and is in exceptional condition. It has the unique detachable 22 inch barrel that can be stored in a parachutes jump bag with the very desirable ten-round rotary magazine that could be reloaded with strippers or one at a time. These rifles all used a one piece cast and machined receiver with a perforated barrel shroud on the front end. The receiver is roll-marked: "CAL. 30-06 SEMI. AUTO./"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A./serial number B1143". The right rear side of the receiver is stamped with a small five-pointed star indicating it was inspected and accepted by the Netherlands purchasing commission. Directly below that is an inverted triangle marked inside: "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." The bolt is numbered "B5627" (numbered components on Johnson rifles did not match). The face of the barrel collar is correctly stamped: ".30 06/41". The receiver has a tangent style rear sight graduated in meters. They have a parkerized metal finish with a bright polished bolt and a two-piece oil finished, walnut stock. The U.S. Marine Corps tested the Johnson rifle in 1941 and in early 1942, obtained a limited number of the Dutch contract Model 1941 riles. Some of these were subsequently issued to the 1st Parachute Battalion. Most of the Dutch Model 1941 rifles remained un-issued and were sold as surplus in the 1950s and 1960s.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original green parkerized finish overall with a blued rear sight. As noted the bolt remains in the white polish from the factory. The wood components are all in excellent condition with only very minimal handling marks with the forend showing a dark walnut color with the buttstock showing a lighter color indicating it may have been lightly cleaned (but not sanded). An exceptional high condition Johnson Model 1941 semi-automatic rifle.
