Description:

This is an early example of a WWII Johnson Model 1941 semi-automatic rifles as manufactured by the Cranston Arms Co. The rifle has the distinctive detachable 22 inch barrel, one-piece cast and machined receiver that has the perforated barrel shroud on the front end with the ten-round rotary magazine. They have a parkerized metal finish with a bright polished bolt with a two-piece oil finished, walnut stock. The receiver is roll-marked: "CAL. 30-06 SEMI. AUTO./"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A./serial number 8231". The right rear side of the receiver is stamped with a small five-pointed star indicating it was inspected and accepted by the Netherlands purchasing commission. Directly below that is and inverted triangle, marked inside with: "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO.". The bolt is numbered "6617" (numbered components on Johnson rifles did not match). The face of the barrel collar is correctly stamped with: ".30 06/41". The receiver has a tangent style rear sight graduated in meters. In August 1940, the Netherlands Purchasing Commission ordered 10,200 Johnson Automatic rifles to arm colonial troops in the Dutch East Indies. The Japanese invaded and captured the Dutch colonies in December 1941 before most of the Johnson Model 1941 rifles could be delivered. The U.S. Marine Corps tested the Johnson rifle in 1941 and in early 1942, obtained a limited number of the Dutch contract Model 1941 riles. Some of these were subsequently issued to the 1st Parachute Battalion. Most of the Dutch Model 1941 rifles remained un-issued and were sold as surplus in the 1950s and 1960s. This desirable rifle is complete with an original leather sling, bayonet and leather scabbard and a spare barrel. The spare barrel was assembled using a surplus 1903 barrel fitted with a correct barrel extension and middle barrel support.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 80% of a dark green arsenal reparkerized metal finish overall with edge and high spot wear with exposed section of the original barrel showing light pitting and corrosion overall. The wood components are in very good condition with a nice dark finish showing numerous light handling marks and pressure dents overall from actual use. The bayonet shows 85% of its parkerized finish with even honest wear overall and the scabbard is in fine condition with nice intact stitching with darkening and light pressure dents on the face of the scabbard. The spare barrel is in very fine condition with 95% of a medium gray parkerized finish overall. A nice looking complete Johnson rifle rig.
