Description:

The Mk.2 Mod. 0 was an early attempt by the Defense Department to convert existing U.S. Navy M1 Garand rifles to the now standard 7.62 NATO cartridge. This was done by adding a metal chamber bushing or sleeve configured to the 7.62mm round, enlarging to gas port for proper operating pressures, and adding a plastic magazine spacer to ensure that the .30-06 Springfield cartridge could not be loaded into the shorter 7.62 NATO chamber. Conversions were performed by both American Machine & Foundry and Harrington & Richardson. Standard blade and peep sights with a "1 45" dated Springfield barrel with the correct "7.62 NATO" conversion markings. Standard markings on the receiver heel. The oil finished stock is stamped with a boxed "S.A./GAW" inspection mark, crossed cannon Ordnance Department stamp, and a circled "P" on the underside of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished and converted to 7.62 NATO. 95% of the arsenal parkerized finish remains with some color variance between components, some light edge wear, and some small scattered dings. The stock is also very fine with crisp inspection marks, and numerous small scattered dings and indentations. Mechanically excellent.
