Description:

Manufactured by the Springfield Armory in about 1904, this rifle was run through the post-1905 battery of adjustments and upgrades, which included the replacement of the early rod bayonet with a lug for a knife bayonet and rechambering for the 30-06 Springfield cartridge. An improvement over the previous 30-03 cartridge, the 30-06 used a ballistically superior "spitzer" profile bullet, and would become the American standard through World War II, as well as a mainstay of sport shooters and parent case for a number of popular wildcat cartridges. Hooded blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 2700 yards, with a "SA/bomb/05" marked barrel and a straight-handled bolt marked "SS" on the underside of the rear lug. Smooth "S" pattern stock, with "S" on the tip, an ungrooved high hump forearm, "D" and "H" stamps in the magazine cutoff slot, "G.R.G." cartouche on the left side, script "P" on the underside of the wrist, brown leather sling and a smooth steel buttplate. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal modified, with traces of the blue finish, showing areas of mixed brown patina, scattered pitting, and mild handling marks. The stock shows a set of thin but long cracks starting at the trigger guard, crossing the wrist and approaching the comb, a shorter crack extending from the upper tang, and a mended chip at the heel of the buttplate, along with a number of light dings and scratches. The sling is cracked but remains generally supple. Mechanically excellent.
