Description:

Manufactured in 1867 and has the style of engraving commonly seen on revolvers engraved by Gustave Young with floral scroll and punch dot engraving on the barrel, frame, trigger guard bow and lower hammer sides. The upper hammer sides have a dog head pattern. Note the similar hammer on the Model 1860 Army on the top of page 82 of "The Book of Colt Engraving". The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line New York U.S. address, and the left side of the frame has the "COLTS/PATENT" marking. The left trigger guard shoulder is marked "44 CAL". The rebated cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 9407". The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9407" is marked on the cylinder pin and cylinder. The wedge is numbered "9355". It has the standard blade front and hammer notch rear sights, blue finish with casehardened frame, loading lever and hammer, and silver-plated brass trigger guard. Fitted with a smooth one-piece grip. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. The barrel, back strap and cylinder retain 40% plus bright original high polish blue finish, with a smooth gray patina on the balance. Most of the original bright case colors remain on the loading lever. The frame and hammer have a smooth gray patina. 80% of the original silver plating remains on the trigger guard. The exposed brass has a natural untouched aged patina. The grip is also fine with some shrinkage, a few minor age cracks on the bottom and an attractive colored grain. The cylinder scene and markings are clear and the engraving remains crisp. The action is excellent.
