Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1855 and has the Model 2 features, including a brass cone/post front sight, the pointing hand/manicule preceding the "+COLT'S PT/1855+" and "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD CT USA+" markings on top of the barrel, grooved top strap, and cabin and Indian cylinder roll-scene. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, side of the cylinder, butt, and grip inlet. An included document lists the original owner of this revolver as James Drury Proctor (1832-1900) of City Point, Virginia, the second owner as Christopher Bland Proctor (1863-1941), third owner as Christopher Bland Proctor (1886-1920), and fourth owner as James Bland Proctor (b. 1915), the great, great grandson of the original owner. James Drury Proctor is buried in Petersburg and served as a private in Company F of the 13th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. The regiment fought in many of the most important battles in the east including the Battle of Gettysburg and Siege of Petersburg. The case has a C. Leonard marked and Old Street, Petersburg, Virginia, addressed cap tin, single side eagle powder flask, screwdriver, and a Colt patent bullet mold. Another revolver from the same collection with the same provenance also has the same cap tin in addition to a C. Leonard retailer label on the case. Charles Leonard (1826-1916) came to Petersburg from London in 1830 and was initially trained as a gunsmith before he went into the hardware trade in 1845. His company remained open at least until 1965. In an advertisement for Charles Leonard's "City Gun, Rifle, & Pistol Manufacturing and Importing Warehouse" from the same year this revolver was manufactured in the Statistical Gazetteer of the State of Virginia his shop is listed as located at No. 15 Old Street.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 75% original blue primarily on the frame and barrel, the vast majority of the original case colors on the hammer, traces of original case colors on the loading lever, mostly smooth brown patina on the balance, generally crisp markings, faint but visible cylinder scene, some light oxidation, and minor scratches and marks. The grip is also very fine with light handling wear, a slight chip at the toe, and some light edge wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with mild storage wear including some small chips. The accessories are fine with mostly mild wear and some heavier wear on the mold. This is a very attractive set made all the more desirable by its Southern provenance and attribution to a Confederate cavalryman.
