Description:

Without question this is the finest Smith patented percussion carbine that we have ever offered for sale! In fact, it is believed that only a few Smith patented carbines were engraved. The carbine is truly a sensational piece of period firearms art attributed to famed Master Engraver Gustave Young. The receiver has full coverage floral scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The standard Mass. Arms Co., Poultney & Trimble and Smith markings on the left side of the receiver are inside banners. The beautiful scrollwork extends to the hammer, trigger guard, lower tang, barrel collar, barrel latch, and buttplate tang. Impressive and highly detailed Civil War battle scenes are engraved on the trigger guard and top of the receiver. The barrel band has a simple scallop border engraving. The barrel is equipped with a German blade front sight and an unmarked folding ladder rear sight. The serial number is stamped on the front of the frame and back of the barrel collar. Mounted on a highly figured varnished walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The right side of the buttstock has a blank silver oval presentation plaque, leaving admirers to speculate the intended recipient. The battle motifs and high grade finishes makes a highly decorated Union officer a perfect candidate for this carbine. The takedown case has brass furniture and is lined in red velvet. The following accessories are included: single cavity bullet mold, screwdriver, leather sling, Hicks cap tin and Poultney & Trimble Smith carbine cartridge box (empty). The Smith carbine was designed by Dr. Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York, in the late 1850s and was manufactured by the American Machine Works, Massachusetts Arms Company, and American Arms Company in Massachusetts from 1861 to 1865. A total of 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the U.S. making it one of the more popular cavalry carbines used during the Civil War. Smaller quantities of the carbines were sold commercially including through Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. Poultney & Trimble served as Gilbert Smith's agents.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall. The barrel retains 98% original blue finish. The buttplate and trigger guard retain 70% original blue finish and the barrel band retains generous amounts of original blue finish with the overall balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The remaining surfaces retain 85% plus vivid original case colors. The engraving is crisp. The wood is excellent with some minor dings and scratches and retaining most of the original piano varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine with a number of minor handling/storage marks and faded lining showing some minor high spot wear. There is a minor hole on the lid padding. A sensational presentation panel scene engraved Smith carbine that is a must have for the serious Civil War or high art firearms collector.
