Description:

The Model 1850 foot officers sword by John Roner of Cincinnati, Ohio, has a 30 3/4 inch etched blade and has the following presentation inscription on the locket of the scabbard: "Presented to/COL. S.A. RICE/officers of the/33rd Iowa Vol." Brigadier General Samuel Allen Rice (promoted from colonel in August of 1863) moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1851. He was Attorney General of Iowa in 1861. He died at Oskaloosa on July 6, 1864, from an infected bullet wound to the foot that he received at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. The cane is 32 1/2 inches long and has a gold cap inscribed "Presented /To/Col. J.W. Jenkens/by 31st Iowa/Infty." Jeremiah W. Jenkins moved to Maquoketa, Iowa, in 1850 or 1851 and worked as an attorney. He was elected as a state senator in 1856 and 1858. During the Civil War, he mustered in as a lieutenant colonel, and he took command of the unit in mid-December 1864 and received the rank of colonel on May 11, 1865. The 31st served under Sherman's command and fought at Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta campaign. Jenkins was wounded multiple times, including at Vicksburg and by a piece of shell at Resaca which inflicted a wound listed as severe in the period reports of the battle and from which he never fully recovered. Given he received the rank of colonel just a month before the unit mustered out and his injuries, this cane was likely presented to him upon returning home and may have been regularly used when he returned to his law career.

Rating Definition:

Both are very good. The sword blade has crisp etching, mild pitting, light gray patina overall with moderate edge wear including some strike marks. The brass on the hilt and scabbard has dark aged patina. The chape has some dents. The grip has some flaking and moderate handling wear. The cane has a modern rubber tip, mild marks and scratches along the shaft, and some dents and light scratches on the gold handle.
