Description:

These Colt muskets were produced throughout the Civil War under contract with the Union and state governments. An estimated 100,000 muskets were manufactured by the end of the war. This 1864 dated example has mostly the standard markings and features. However, it has a fancy grade stock with attractive figure on the butt and no inspector cartouches (not always present on state contract pieces). It comes with a custom hardwood case, a U.S. socket bayonet, a reproduction replacement martial themed powder flask, nipple container, and three tools. The consignor indicated this was a presentation piece, and very well could be due to the uninspected highly figured wood.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with mottled patina forming on the otherwise bright metal surfaces and some minor marks and scratches. The very fine highly figured walnut stock has several small chips at the edges, scattered scratches and dents, and smooth oiled finish. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good with moderate storage wear, warping of the case, and dents in the flask. Overall a very attractive example of the Colt Special Model 1861 rifle-muskets with rare figured stock.
