Description:

Around 13,000 rifle-muskets were manufactured by Samuel Norris and William T. Clement of Springfield for the State of Massachusetts. One contract reportedly consisted of the more common Model 1861 pattern and a later contract consisted of these Model 1863 Type II pattern. The only significant deviation from the Springfield pattern are the "S.N. & W.T.C./FOR /MASSACHUSETTS" markings on the locks. In fact, Norris and Clement reportedly purchased rejected parts from various suppliers including the national armory at Springfield. This piece is dated "1864" on the lock and "1863" on the barrel. The stock has "ESA" and "MTH" cartouches on the left flat. The bayonet is marked "US" at the base and fits poorly.

Rating Definition:

Fine with faint patina and spotting on the otherwise bright surfaces, crisp markings including cartouches, on the very fine stock with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
