Description:

The reverse of the upper suspension band is inscribed "Presented to/CAPT. FRED A. ROSS/by the members of/Co. D. 133rd. Reg. Ind. Vol." Captain Fred A. Ross served with the 133rd from May to August 1864. They served as railroad guards along the lines of the Nashville & Chattanooga, Tennessee & Alabama, and Memphis & Charleston railroads. The brass fittings were all originally gilded. The hilt has acanthus scroll patterns, a German silver grip, and a full bald eagle pommel. The 32 inch straight blade has gold highlighted patriotic and leaf pattern etching and "IRON PROOF" on the spine. The scabbard is nickel with engraved brass fittings.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with strong original gilding on the blade, light spotting, minor edge wear, and fairly bright surfaces. The hilt has original gilding in protected areas and aged patina. The scabbard has minor scratches and dings on the body and aged patina on the brass.
