Description:

The 30 inch, lightly curved plate has martial and floral etching with gilded backgrounds and highlights. The right side has "QUI TRANSTULIT SUSTINET" in a golden scroll under three trees. This translates to "He who transplanted sustains" and is the motto of Connecticut. Their seal has three grapevines. The spine has vine designs and "IRON PROOF." The left side has the Clauberg maker's mark on the ricasso, a motif based on the Great Seal of the U.S., and "DEEDS NOT WORDS" over a stand of arms. The hilt is similar to those found on some Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer swords and has a bald eagle head finial, eagle and shield guard with pierced scrollwork, silver grip with golden wire, and another eagle and shield on the pommel. The scabbard has a silver body and gilt brass fittings with a design similar to the Statue of Freedom that has topped the U.S. Capitol building since 1863 on the upper band, arms on the center band, and a Civil War soldier with Union flag and sword among scroll designs on the tip.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with mix of original gilt finish and aged patina on the brass, aged patina along the silvered body of the scabbard and the grip, most of the original gilding and bright polished surfaces on the excellent blade, some light scratches and marks, and solid fit.
