Description:

Only 115 carbines were completed and delivered by Dwight, Chapin & Co. by September 1863 under a 2,000 gun (split evenly between rifles and carbines) sub-contract with Merwin & Bray for the U.S. Government. The company went into bankruptcy, and the parts and completed guns on hand were acquired by Merwin & Bray who sent them to Ball & Williams to complete. The machinery was purchased by Oliver Winchester, and Chapin served as a secretary at Winchester. This carbine falls within the Dwight, Chapin & Co. 1-115 range and is marked "DWIGHT, CHAPIN & CO/BRIDGEPORT, CONN/MERWIN. & BRAY/AGT'S.N.Y./91" on the left side of the frame. The right side has the standard Ballard patent marking. It also features a blade front sight, notch and folding leaf rear sight, manual extractor, E.M. Dustin's small "D" inspection markings on several components and "EMD" on the top of the comb, and "34" on the bottom of the receiver ahead of the lever.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled brown patina overall, minor marks and scratches, and some deep strike marks in the stock along with the usual general light dings and scrapes. The first line of the markings on the left side is faint, but the remaining markings are clear. Mechanically fine. Dwight, Chapin & Co. carbines are the scarcest of all the Civil War Ballards.
