Description:

The Model 1841 rifles like the earlier U.S. martial rifles were not initially designed for use with bayonets since riflemen up to the Civil War were not meant to serve as line infantry. 1,600 Remington manufactured Model 1841 rifles were altered by F.H. Grosz of New York City for the State of New York and delivered in December of 1861. Their muzzles were turned down in order to fit the standard Model 1842 socket bayonets and bayonet studs were fitted on the bottom of the barrels. The front sights were moved back to clear the bayonets. These rifles are known to have been issued to the 7th, 10th, 12th, and 192nd New York Regiments. This one has the standard modifications, notch rear sight, "1849" on the tail of the lock plate and upper barrel tang, standard Remington and U.S. inspection markings, and includes a spare nipple in the patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very good with brown patina on the iron, mild pitting and oxidation primarily on the barrel, aged patina on the brass, some verdigris at the edges of the brass, strong oiled finish and some flame figure along the forend, general marks and scratches, and a few minor chips and dents in the otherwise very good stock. Mechanically fine.
