Description:

This Colt Model 1855 has a star burst and "R M" (Republica Mexicana) marking on one of the chambers indicating it was sent south of the border to the Republic of Mexico. It was originally a full stock rifle. The much shortened barrel is fitted with a blade front sight and a fixed notch rear sight. It has a brass forend cap and smooth 9 1/4 inch forearm secured by a single barrel band with a sling swivel. "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." is in the top strap groove. The cylinder and frame has the standard patent markings. "53" is stamped on the buttplate tang at the heel. The buttplate has a small trapdoor compartment with a cleaning rod extension.

Rating Definition:

Good as modified (shortened) with mostly bright polished surfaces mixed with some gray and brown patina, light pitting, and scattered marks and scratches. The rear lower tang screw is absent. The wood is also good and has numerous moderate scratches and dings and a few chips. The markings are generally crisp, and it remains mechanically fine. This is a very interesting Colt revolving rifle that went south of the border. Writer cannot recall seeing another one of these in recent times; their survival rate must be low!
