Description:

This rare rifle is one of only around 841-850 Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen rifles reconfigured into .22 Gallery Practice rifles by Springfield. These are the only Krags manufactured at Springfield following the adoption of the Model 1903. The serial number is very close to other known .22 Gallery Practice rifles including the example in the NRA collection which is 475650 (just two rifles after!). The rifle has the distinctive altered receiver side showing the small hole for the ejector, with the correct .22 caliber barrel with off-set chamber and bolt with auxiliary extractor for the .22 Long cartridge. The receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, 475648" followed by "CAL./.22." It has the standard pinned blade front sight, replacement 1896 pattern rear sight, "JSA/1902" cartouche on the left, and a canvas sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled with 40% original finish, mostly on the receiver and barrel with smooth brown patina on the balance, some spots of minor oxidation and pitting, and light scratches. The handguard is fair with a split running the full length. The replacement stock is very good and has some scratches, dings, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This is a scarce variation of the iconic Springfield Armory Krag-Jorgensen series.
