Description:

The is approximately 34 inches long along the spine and 1 1/4 inch wide. It has martial designs with gold fill and niter blue backgrounds along with Hermes' caduceus and "honor/and my/country" on the left and "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" on the right. The langets are spread wing bald eagles, and the finial is a lion's head. The knuckle bow is a pair of intertwined serpents with spear point tails. The grip scales are grooved mother of pearl. The rest of the hilt has martial and floral motifs. The silver scabbard has floral scroll designs along the lower sections, and section with American themed martial designs between the suspension bands including the eagle and shield design. The sword was likely manufactured in the early 19th century in France or Belgium for the American market. No maker's marks are visible. Somewhat similar European manufactured swords made for the American market with "honor and my country" have previously been dated to around 1810.

Rating Definition:

Fine with attractive aged patina on the silver, most of the gold fill in the blade designs, patches of vibrant original niter blue, mottled gray patina on the balance of the somewhat loose blade, some light pitting, minor edge wear, chipping on the scales, and crisp designs throughout. Overall a very attractive saber likely owned by a distinguished American military officer.
