Description:

The Winchester-Hotchkiss was originally designed by Benjamin Hotchkiss and featured a turn bolt action design with a tubular magazine that loaded under the bolt. He sold the patent rights to Winchester in 1877, and the resulting firearms were Winchester's first attempt at producing and marketing a bolt action rifle. These Third Models can be easily distinguished from the earlier models by the two-piece stock and exposed frame. This one was manufactured in 1895. The lower tang has the three-line patent marking. The upper tang is marked "{MODEL OF 1883}", and the forward area of the receiver ahead of the trigger guard has the serial number. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line Winchester address ahead of the rear barrel band and "45-70" marked on top at the breech. The buttplate is marked "247" on the tang. It has a replacement beaded blade front sight and a notch and folding ladder rear sight.

Rating Definition:

Very good with shortened forearm with 40% plus original blue and casehardened finish, minor oxidation, brown and gray patina on the balance, and some light marks and scratches throughout. The wood has some nice figure in the wrist and some minor scratches and small dents. Mechanically fine.
