Description:

Only a small number of these rifles were manufactured c. 1874-1890. They were meant for long range target shooting at the Creedmoor range on Long Island. The American team beat the Irish team in the famous first match at Creedmoor using in part Remington rifles, and L.L. Hepburn, Remington's mechanical department superintendent, was one of the American team members. This one has the "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, N.Y." barrel address suggesting it was manufactured pre-1888. It also features a wind gauge globe front sight, "44 S" and the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel, a "3" on the lower right barrel flat, smooth forearm with iron cap and the matching serial number, the patent markings on the left side of the frame, a long range Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, and a checkered semi-pistol grip buttstock with a contrasting grip insert and steel shotgun style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 85% plus original blue finish, 40% plus fading original case colors, stronger case colors in the protected areas, smooth finish on the wood, some attractive figure in the butt, crisp checkering, some slight chips/flakes on the grip inlay, minor scratches and dings, some patches of slight pitting primarily on the buttplate, and crisp markings throughout. Mechanically excellent. This rifle is certainly among the finer Remington Creedmoor rifles in the collector's market.
