Description:

Less than 1,000 No. 3 Match rifles are estimated to have been manufactured in 1893-1907. This rifle does not fit neatly in the "A" or "B" Quality descriptions and was likely special ordered. It has a wind gauge front sight (no insert or spirit level present), no rear barrel sight dovetail, "E. REMINGTON & SON. ILION, N.Y." on top of the barrel, "38" ahead of the forearm (38-40 or 38-50), "V & W" (Vernier and wind gauge sights) and "H.L. WHITING" under the forearm, a Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, spire style accents in the checkering on the forearm and grip, standard size cheek rest, nickel plated Swiss buttplate, and matching serial numbers on the forearm, barrel, lower tang, and buttplate. Hepburn's sometimes have L.L. Hepburn markings on the bottom of the barrel, but the significance of the Whiting marking on this rifle is unclear. He may have been the one who originally ordered the rifle. An H.L. Whiting is recorded as working as surveyor in the East from at least the 1850s-late 1870s.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% original nickel plating on buttplate, aged patina on the exposed brass, 40% original case colors, 30% original blue finish, and mostly brown patina on the balance, and general minor marks. The reoiled wood is fine and has a few nicks and dings in the otherwise crisp checkering, smooth finish, and some minor scratches. Mechanically excellent.
