Description:

Only a few hundred of these rifles are believed to have been manufactured in 1874-1890. They are specifically designed for use in long range target shooting competitions like those held at the famous Creedmoor Rifle Range on Long Island. It has the correct overall configuration and features a wind gauge globe front sight with spirit level, no rear barrel sight, long range Vernier tang sight, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a steel shotgun buttplate and no cheek rest. It is marked with "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, N.Y." on top of the barrel, "L.L. HEPBURN/L.L. HEPBURN/L.L. HEPBURN" on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm, and "44S" ahead of the forearm. The forearm, barrel, lower tang, and toe of the buttplate have the matching serial number. Lewis L. Hepburn was Remington's mechanical department superintendent, the designer of the No. 3 Hepburn rifle, and a talented marksman who competed on the American Creedmoor International Shooting Team.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle is original and retains 85% plus of the lightly fading original blue and casehardened finish, some slight edge wear, spots of faint surface spotting, oxidation and residue on the buttplate, and general minor marks and scratches. The wood is also excellent and has crisp checkering, light scratches, a few dings, some minuscule flakes at some edges, and some darkening and marks at the edge of the butt. The markings are clear, and it is mechanically excellent.
