Description:

Manufactured in 1883. The barrel has the scarce "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON" address, and the revolver is chambered for the .455 Eley cartridge. Only 1,147 Model 1878s were manufactured in this caliber with a 5 1/2 inch barrel. The left side of the trigger guard is marked "455 CAL/E," the serial number is marked on the grip strap in two-lines ahead of the lanyard ring, and assembly number "600" is marked on the loading gate and left side of the grip frame under the grip panel. The cylinder has the number "7984," possibly a factory error (as the "7" is awkwardly stamped). British proof and inspection marks stamped between each cylinder chamber at the rear and on the underside of the barrel. Fitted with early two-piece checkered walnut bird's head grips that are hand numbered to the gun ("984"). The oak case has brass hardware, an inset round brass plaque on the exterior of the lid, green felt lining, 28 round cartridge block, a Colt London paper label attached to the interior of the lid. An oiler, "L" shaped tool and cleaning rod are included.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a mix of smooth brown and gray patinas. The grips are also fine with some minor dings and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. The case is very good overall with worn lining and some minor handling/storage marks. Nearly all of the stained original paper label remains.
