Description:

This is truly a spectacular, museum quality cased matching pair of gold inlaid and high relief engraved exhibition quality percussion pistols featuring high relief carved stock. The pistols were manufactured by Rache, a gunshop in Breslau (in Silesia). In business from around 1865 to 1870, Rache is known to have exhibited guns at the 1869 Breslau Industrial Exhibition. The barrel features exquisite original brown Damascus pattern with a decorative gold inlaid band at the breech and singed "Rache in Breslau" on the top flat. A Liege proof is stamped on the left barrel flat at the breech. Near full coverage of a beautifully executed high relief floral scroll and mythical motif engraving is featured on the hammer, lock plate, barrel tang and breech plug. This engraving incorporates mythical gods entwined in the scrollwork with a grotesque face on the nipple bolster. The scrollwork extends to the artfully sculpted spur trigger guard, butt cap and escutcheons. The number "1" is engraved on the barrel tang. The sights along with the rear sight elevator screw are niter blue. The pistol is equipped with a single set trigger and using a Thouvenin system, which allowed for the projectile to be rammed against the stem so that the projectile engraved the deep rifling and created, in theory, a gas seal. The half stock of finely figured European walnut features fine and extensive floral scrollwork entwined with cherubs. The carving is featured on the left stock flat, fluted grip and forearm tip. A silver thumb shield escutcheon with the engraved initial "C" is also featured on the stock. The French fitted presentation case is lined in dark green velvet with compartments for accessories. The outside of the case has veneer walnut and the keyhole escutcheon is pearl. Most of the accessories feature a beautiful engraving that matches the pistol engraving. The accessories are the following: ebony handle screwdriver, ebony handle nipple wrench, ebony mallet/rammer with silver plated countersunk head to center the bullet against the breech post, patch cutter, single cavity bullet mold with articulated sprue cutter, worm, oiler, adjustable powder measure, mainspring vise, rear sight adjustment key, ebony cleaning rod with silver plated tip, silver plate powder flask and case key.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 97% plus of the original brown Damascus showing only light high edge wear. The remaining metal surfaces have a very attractive coin appearance. The hammer spur has been professionally repaired. Most of the original niter blue finish remains on the sights and elevation screw. The stock is also excellent with a few minor handling marks. The engraving and carving are crisp. The case is very fine retaining most of the veneer and some high spot wear on the lining. The pearl keyhole escutcheon is cracked. Mechanically excellent. Truly a spectacular matching pair of museum grade cased Rache target pistols with original accessories that would be the centerpiece to even the most advanced 19th century exhibition firearm collection.
