About 4,000 of these Type II carbines were manufactured circa 1863-1864. The Gwyn & Campbell "Union Rifles/Carbines" were the successors to the Cosmopolitan/Gross patent carbines. Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell owned the Cosmopolitan Arms Co. and all of these carbines were manufactured in the same plant in Hamilton, Ohio, circa 1863-1864. The carbine has the Type II features and markings including matching serial numbers at the breech. The left stock flat is stamped with script "RKW" and "WHR" cartouches which are very crisp, and "WHR" is also stamped in block letters ahead of the buttplate tang on the comb. The left barrel flat has an "R" and "[?]A.&Co."

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% original case colored/blue finish overall, mostly brown patina on the faded areas, revarnished wood, some slight spotting, pitting concentrated on the buttplate, general mild scratches and marks, and mostly crisp markings and cartouches. The barrel breech exhibits wrench type marks behind the rear sight. Mechanically excellent.
