Description:

Manufactured in 1918, this rifle shows an interesting arsenal modification. The original buttstock has been cut down, and the final inches replaced with an open sided steel framework that supports a curved buttplate and contains a large checkered trigger. This trigger is connected to the original trigger by a steel shaft and stirrup arrangement; either can be used to fire the rifle. Speculated by prior owners to be the work of an unidentified ordnance workshop smith, this new arrangement would permit firing in the usual manner as well as in any number of other non-standard postures and orientations, or fired via a remote line run through the buttstock. Weapons designed to fire over or through barricades while concealing the shooter are known to have been made both by field armorers and more proper development outfits, like the famous Cameron-Yaggi periscope gun or the Beech Rifle that was field-built for ANZAC forces at Gallipoli. Blade front and ladder rear sights, with an Eddystone barrel dated "7-18", "E" marked small parts and a smooth straight grip stock with a 13 5/8 inch length of pull.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal modified, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing some spotting overall, as well as some bright edge wear and handling marks. The stock is fine, with some light scratches and dents overall, some scuffing concentrated around the butt, and a screw absent from the left side of the butt frame. Mechanically excellent, with both triggers operational.
