Description:

Simeon North was one of the most influential arms makers of the early republic beginning with manufacturing the first U.S. martial pistols in 1799 (the North-& Cheney Model 1799s) and finally ending with the Model 1843 Hall carbines right up to his death in 1852. He was influential in developing the first milling machines and also helped establish truly interchangeable parts on U.S. martial arms. He manufactured 6,501 of these Model 1840 Hall carbines in 1840-1843. 6,001 of them were the standard Type II with the distinctive "fishtail" shaped breech lever. The vast majority of these were smoothbore, but this piece was rifled as were some of Type Is manufactured earlier in 1840. Aside from the rare rifling, it has the standard markings and features and is dated "1840" on the breech. These carbines would have been used in the Mexican-American War and, to a lesser degree, during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Very good with patches of brown lacquer finish, traces of original case colors, brown and gray patina on the exposed areas, and some light oxidation. The stock is also very good and has refreshed oil finish, scattered scrapes and dings, subtle cartouche, and a few slight chips. Mechanically excellent. This is a very rare Hall carbine variation certainly missing from most U.S. martial collections.
